This is a rags-to-riches story in which the transformation is brought about by land inheritance. Adelle Clark is fourteen when the novel opens, and she is being raised by an aunt and uncle. They own a 50-acre tract of land (Clark's Field) that is smack dab in the middle of a growing metropolis. When they die, Adelle becomes the inheritor of the land. A pack of lawyers try to get her (through her guardian) to sell for a paltry amount, but kindly old Judge Orcutt becomes suspicious and prevents the sale. Later Adelle does sell, but for a figure closer to the true value of the land (about a million dollars). She becomes a woman of wealth, which she learns isn't as wonderful as it's all cracked up to be. She marries a ne'er-do-well whom she eventually divorces, has a huge mansion built only to see it burn down, and then discovers long-lost relatives in California whom she feels, contrary to the law, are entitled to some of the money she got for Clark's Field. Herrick is here satirizing the wealthy and in doing so comes close to over-idealizing his heroine by making her almost too eager to give her money away; but he's realist enough to make Adelle not want to go back to a life of poverty again, but just to be careful how and where she spends her inheritance. But why she is so adamant in her desire to sacrifice so much of her wealth the author doesn't emphasize. Herrick's tone is light and mildly amusing, though the satire is not very biting, except for maybe his attack on the wealthy though useless girls school Adelle attends. It's a modern Cinderella story that charms but doesn't penetrate too deeply beneath the surface.
